Hidden Gems- Japan We recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Tokyo, and amidst the city's bustling streets and vibrant culture, one adventure stood out: the Mario Go-Kart experience. You've probably seen these colorful go-karts zooming through your social media feed. Well, we couldn't resist the allure of becoming go-kart racers either. Here's the lowdown on our Mario Go-Kart experience – the good, the great, and a few important things to know.

Racing Through Tokyo:

A Mario Kart Experience Review

Preparation is Key

Before you even think about revving your go-kart engine in Tokyo, there's one essential piece of paperwork you must have – an international driver's license. Ensure you obtain this license before your trip to Japan. It's a relatively straightforward process, and you can find detailed information about it in our post "Japan Prep".

Now, when you're all set to hit the streets of Tokyo, you can book this exhilarating experience on platforms like Viator, TripAdvisor, Expedia, and Klook. There are various routes, go-kart companies, time slots, and durations to choose from, so you can tailor your experience to your liking. Click to check out the places I looked up and vetted when I was trying to book. They fill up fast!

We opted for Monkey Kart Asakusa and were thrilled by the array of cute karts available, complete with character-themed accessories to put you in the mood. However, let's start with the few cons to manage your expectations:

Cons:

No phone usage at all. While social media might paint a picture of taking out your phone at red lights for pictures, this is no longer the case. The Japanese police don't allow it, so they request you to leave your phone in a locker.

  • Your guide will take pictures along the way at stops and send them to you via airdrop or WhatsApp at the end of the tour.

  • Unfortunately, there are no dedicated photographers stationed along the route to take pictures or videos like some videos suggested.

  • Monkey Kart also offered the rental of a GoPro. SO if you have one of those I suggest bringing it with you along with a strap to attach it to the vehicle.

There will be no Mario characters to choose from.

  • Nintendo has a strict stance on copyright, so don't expect to see any Mario characters. You'll be driving cool go-karts but without the familiar Nintendo crew.

The karts are on the small side,

  • Your height and weight might also affect the kart's speed. My husband had a great time but being 6’5” he said an hour was his max and he could tell he wasn’t able to go as fast. So taller or bigger individuals may find them a bit cramped.

Pros:

Mario Karting through Tokyo is an exciting and unique adventure.

  • The opportunity to zip through the city's streets in colorful go-karts is simply exhilarating.

  • Beyond the thrill of go-karting, this experience offers a fantastic way to see Tokyo. You'll explore areas you might want to revisit and dive into Tokyo's vibrant neighborhoods.

  • Be ready for loads of attention from passersby. People will be snapping pictures and waving, creating an unmatched sense of fun and celebrity status. Feeling like a Tokyo local driving on bustling streets.

Tips for Booking Your Own Mario Kart Experience

Check Multiple Platforms: Explore all the booking platforms – Klook, Viator, TripAdvisor, and Expedia. Each may have different availability for days, times, and routes.

Come Prepared: Don't eat a heavy meal before the tour, as there are no pit stops. Also, think about creative poses for your pictures.

Be Adventurous: Dress up, use the accessories, and immerse yourself in the fun. This is an experience you'll want to remember.
