Mexico Prep:

What You Need, What I Wish I Had, and What Social Media Lied About

Planning a trip to Mexico? Excellent choice! Mexico's diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cities are calling your name. While it may seem daunting to navigate, I've got you covered with essential tips to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, these insights will help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure.

1. Smooth Sailing Through Customs

With numerous airports across the country, it’s essential to know what to expect. One exciting aspect is that you might get a passport stamp! However, this is not guaranteed, as the digital era is changing how we travel. Mexico City, for example, has introduced electronic gates (EGATEs) for entering the country. While this streamlines the process, it can sometimes mean no stamp for your passport. Also, watch this quick video for more information!

Most airports in Mexico are warm and involve a fair amount of walking.

Be prepared for a secondary security check where your bags might be scanned again. Agents may ask you to open your bag for inspection, so pack accordingly.

Also, remember that certain food items are not allowed into Mexico, such as

  • seeds / seedlings

  • fresh plants

  • fruits

  • vegetables

  • flowers,

  • chicken and beef

  • Be cautious with snacks like trail mix and granola bars that may contain prohibited items.

2. Money Matters

Never use the money exchange services at the airport; they often offer poor rates. Instead, follow these tips for exchanging money:

  1. Ask Your Host or Front Desk: They can often recommend a safe and reliable place to exchange money.

  2. Use Your Hotel: Many hotels can exchange currency if you use a debit card. Note that they typically cannot exchange cash for cash.

  3. ATM Usage: ATMs generally offer good exchange rates. However, be aware that Mexican ATMs sometimes reject foreign cards, and there’s a risk of the machine eating your card. This is rare, but it’s good to be cautious.

  4. Use Credit Cards: Whenever possible, use a credit card with no international fees. This often provides the best exchange rate and is convenient.

3. Getting Around Safely

This part actually is what makes a lot of people not explore more of Mexico outside of their resorts and excursion. The fear of high fees and extortion. Here are some tips for getting from the airport.

  • Renting a car: If you're an experienced driver and comfortable navigating foreign roads, renting a car can offer great freedom. My go-to rental company is National; they have reliable cars and good service. Avoid the extra fees by using my trick!

  • Pre-arrange Transportation: Your resort, hotel, or vacation rental host should be able to give you reliable services to you. This can save you money and stress.

  • Be Cautious at the Airport: When you exit baggage claim, you might be bombarded by people offering transportation services. It can be overwhelming. Stick to your pre-arranged plans and avoid engaging with those who approach you.

  • Public Transportation: Buses and trains are very affordable.

  • Uber: It is available and cheap, but take precautions:

    • Check License Plate and Driver: Always verify that the license plate and driver match the Uber app details.

    • Stay Aware: Keep your phone low and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid being on your phone for extended periods, especially in unfamiliar areas.

4. Avoiding Tourist Scams

Tourists can sometimes be targeted with scams designed to make you spend more. Here’s how to stay savvy:

  • Currency Conversion: Be wary of establishments with currency conversion rates that don't match the national rate.

  • Menu Differences: Some places have different menus for English and Spanish speakers with varying prices. Make sure the prices, fees, and gratuity match both publications.

5. Staying Connected

Having Airalo at the ready is a game-changer for obtaining an ESIM. Personally, as an AT&T user, I've experienced free data and talk for international, and it's disheartening to encounter subpar service. It also avoids the hassle of purchasing a physical SIM card, which can sometimes lead to scams. Airalo simplifies the process, providing a convenient and secure way to ensure you have reliable connectivity without breaking the bank. Also, check out these quick videos for more information!
