Navigating the Choice:

Airbnb vs. Hotels

Feeling safe and secure is always at the forefront of my mind when planning my next adventure. The journey itself may be filled with surprises, but where I lay my head at night is a decision I like to make with careful consideration. So, the big question: Vacation Rentals or Hotels? Let's get into my thought process.

The Price Factor:

One of the initial factors that sways my decision is price. I'm on the lookout for those sweet deals that allow me to stretch my budget a little further. You can save money, however, by looking up multiple places to stay and seeing which ones come out cheaper.

An advantage to hotels, I love to see how reward points can be used to save cash.

With vacation rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO the price is pretty much set.

However, rewards points are NOT always the way to go. There are times when the number of points would be outrageous in comparison to a nightly stay using money! In those instances, it’s a better deal to use a favorite credit card to purchase your accommodations and earn even more reward points. For example, Airbnb has partnered with Delta Airlines and British Airways to let guests earn miles when booking stays and experiences. As well as, VRBO has partnered with Alaska Airlines and United Airlines to let guests earn miles when booking stays.

Airbnb:

To earn Delta SkyMiles, you need to always book through deltaairbnb.com. This will redirect you to the affiliate site to enter your SkyMiles Number. Now, you can earn 1 mile for every $1 spent on qualifying reservation with your SkyMiles Number. Purchases made without going through, deltaairbnb.com, will not be eligible for miles. Your name on your Airbnb account must match your SkyMiles account.

To earn Avios, you need always book through British Airways Airbnb page.

This will redirect you to the affiliate site to enter your Executive Club Number.  Now, you can collect 3 Avios for every $1 spent on eligible purchases. Make sure you choose the correct category for your booking “Book an Airbnb” or “Book an Airbnb Experience”.

VRBO:

To earn MileagePlus, you need to always book through Vrbo United Airlines website. This will redirect you to the affiliate site to enter your MileagePlus number at checkout to receive your bonus miles. Now, you can earn 3 miles for every $1 spent on qualifying bookings.

To earn with Alaska Airlines, you need to have a Mileage Plan number and use their HomeWay marketplace to find the deal to earn 1 mile for every $1 spent on qualifying reservation with your SkyMiles Number.

I search to see which option offers the best amenities, free parking, or a more personalized 1-on-1 experience. Who doesn't love the idea of a bargain If I can get more bang for my buck? I gather all this information, but I do not book quite yet.

The Type of Trip:

Next, I consider the nature of my trip. Have you ever taken my Vacationist or Traveler quiz? It's a great way to determine what kind of journey you're in the mood for. Do I want to be utterly relaxed, pampered, and not have to think about much? Or am I craving the vibrant energy of being in the midst of it all, exploring every nook and cranny? The purpose of my trip plays a pivotal role in my decision-making process.

Access to Activities:

Once I've got a handle on the type of trip, I turn my attention to the activities on my list. Restaurants, beaches, clubs, excursions - you name it. Will a hotel provide a seamless transition to all these experiences? Can a vacation rental host go above and beyond to enhance my stay? These are crucial questions that help me decide which option is the best fit.

Seeking Advice:

In my quest to find answers to these questions, I often turn to my trusted sources. First, I reach out to people I know who've been to the destination I'm considering. Their first-hand experiences are invaluable! Maybe they have recommendations on areas to stay OR avoid. Recommendations for activities or people to contact.

But it doesn't stop there. I would use my secondary sources-people I do not personally know. If I can find an eGyd, who has explored the same location, I'll schedule a 1-on-1 call to tap into their wisdom. I also scour TikTok and Instagram, using the search tool to discover recent insights and recommendations. The power of social media is remarkable for travel planning. Right down to recommended places to stay that might not have checked out. It's all about gathering as much information as possible to make an informed decision.

Then, I’d look and see which could ensure I had a great trip!

In the end, whether it's a vacation rental or a hotel, my choice hinges on an analysis of these factors. Each trip is unique, and the right accommodation can elevate the entire experience. So, the next time you find yourself facing the vacation rental vs. hotel dilemma, remember to consider your priorities, the nature of your journey, and seek advice from fellow travelers to make the best choice for your adventure.

I don’t want you to be afraid to explore this world. I want you to have the confidence and resources that make it easier to enjoy travel.
